Choosing a powder coat color for your parts is not a simple black-and-white process. You need to clear up the gray areas of color selection before powder coating services can begin.
However, you may feel overwhelmed with the vast array of colors, textures, and finishes—not to mention other considerations such as manufacturer options and budget constraints.
All Powder Coat & Screen can help you navigate this intricate process and select the right powder coat color for your parts.
Let’s say you want our team to powder your parts black. Even a color as basic as black has a range of shades, such as charcoal, onyx, ebony, and more. In fact, one of the manufacturers we work with offers hundreds of different shades of black powder. Plus, that manufacturer’s shades and textures differ from what other manufacturers offer.
If you know the specifications of your desired powder color, it’s best to give our team that information up front. For example, if you like Mercedes Black from Tiger Drylac Powder, share that product number (449/80570) with us. This detail not only pinpoints the exact shade of black but also informs us that the powder coating is smooth, high gloss, TGIC polyester, and weather-resistant for interior and exterior applications.
Besides color, you also must choose how the powder will look and feel. Textured finishes offer practical benefits like non-slip surfaces. Smooth, glossy finishes are aesthetically pleasing from a distance. Specialty finishes like glitter, glimmer, matte, vein, translucent, and reflective may also be available for powder coating services. Remember that your choice of texture and finish may also affect the final appearance of your color.
Sometimes, customers want to match a powder to the color of an existing part. This task can be challenging if our team doesn’t know the exact powder color used on the original part. (Remember: even a color like black has many shades!) Color matching can also be tricky if our team doesn’t know how the powder was applied to the original part. Even with the correct powder color, a different application method could alter the look of the new part.
In cases where we don’t know the powder color or application technique, we compare our samples to the original part to get as close to the desired result as possible.
All Powder Coat & Screen works with several powder manufacturers, but we recommend Cardinal Powder and Tiger Drylac Powder because of their high-quality products. Some customers request powders from Sherwin-Williams, so we also tend to have those products in stock. We also work with boutique manufacturers.
Though you can request powder coat colors from any manufacturer, using in-stock powders is generally more cost-effective for powder coating services. Non-stocked colors may incur additional costs, and ordering specific powders in small quantities can result in higher per-pound prices.
For example, when buying our in-stock powder in bulk, we may order 250 pounds of powder at $4 per pound. Recently, we bought five pounds of powder from a boutique company for a special order that cost $30 per pound. Yes—7.5x as much per pound!
For special orders, we must charge customers for the entire quantity—whether we use all the powder on their parts or not. The minimum order required by the manufacturer could be five or 50 pounds. However, we usually let customers keep the remaining supply for future use.
The first step in choosing a color for your parts is contacting All Powder Coat & Screen for an inventory of our available powders. We have in-house booklets with color and finish samples available for local customers.
For remote customers, we advise ordering samples from manufacturers. You can also check Cardinal, Tiger, and other manufacturers’ websites for color options and finished product images. Note: the colors and effects on a screen can deviate from the physical powder’s appearance. We recommend playing it safe by ordering samples if you need to match a specific color.
