All Powder Coat & Screen offers premium powder coating services for various industries, including medical, agriculture, and telecommunications. Our team of seasoned professionals excels at these solutions, particularly powder coating for outdoor applications.
We can powder coat a range of outdoor parts—from small parts to parts as big as 12’ x 12’. Our shop has done this type of work on everything from boxes for cell towers to outdoor equipment for companies such as Caterpillar.
The key is selecting the right powder and pre-treatment options to ensure longevity and durability. With All Powder Coat & Screen’s expertise and consultative services, you can confidently choose the most reliable, weather-resistant powder coatings for your parts.
Powder coating services add protective and decorative finishes to metals. The process involves applying a dry powder onto a metal surface using an electrostatic spray gun. The powder is then cured with heat or UV light to create a smooth, durable, and visually appealing finish.
There are three primary types of powder—polyester, epoxy, and hybrid—but only one is ideal for outdoor applications.
Epoxy powder is suitable for indoor and chemical-resistant applications but is not ideal for outdoor use because it’s susceptible to weathering. Epoxy resins contain aromatic ether bonds that are easily degraded and broken under the sun's ultraviolet radiation. As a result, epoxy powder will lose light and chalk after outdoor sun exposure.
Hybrid powder, which combines epoxy and polyester polymers, is ideal for high-use equipment like power tools. However, it’s unsuitable for outdoor applications because the epoxy will cause the finish to chalk and degrade in less than a couple of months of outdoor exposure. Hybrid powder is also not recommended for outdoor use because of its cost and complexity of application.
Polyester powder, composed of finely ground polyester resin particles, is the best choice for outdoor applications. It offers excellent protection from rain, wind, sun, and other damaging elements. Polyester powder also maintains its appearance for extended periods, reducing the need for frequent maintenance or recoating.
If your parts will be exposed to harsh conditions such as salt water and sea air, All Powder Coat & Screen recommends plating before powder coating to protect the metal. Yellow zinc is often the best choice for steel parts. After plating with yellow zinc, we bake the parts before powder coating to release gasses and prevent bubbles from popping up later.
Our shop may suggest adding a primer as an extra layer of protection against weather elements for applications such as rain-exposed boxes. An epoxy-based powder coat primer can help seal the box, and then the polyester powder adheres to the primer. Gaskets may also be added to parts afterward to keep the weather out.
Using aluminum or stainless steel parts is another way to guard against outdoor threats. These materials are naturally resistant to rust and corrosion, though they are more expensive than steel.
