Masking is an essential part of our powder coating services, but it’s important to understand that some masking jobs are more complex than others. If a part only needs a few studs protected, the solution is usually a straightforward addition of silicone caps or a similar process. The true challenge is powder coating masking on complex parts with challenging geometry or features that must remain clean for assembly or performance.
At All Powder Coat & Screen, our expert sheet metal finishing team treats masking as a central step of the coating process. We know that if the coating interferes with your part’s functionality, it doesn’t matter how good it looks.
Powder coating is an excellent finish for durability and appearance, but it can also change how parts perform or fit. Masking is how we control what gets coated and what stays clean.
Proper masking will prevent coating of critical features such as threads (where buildup can cause torque issues) or electrical contact points (where coating can insulate a surface that must conduct). But masking becomes complex on hard-to-reach surfaces, tight boundaries, or parts with other specific features.
Our team’s experience allows us to handle these difficult tasks because we’ve seen just about every challenge before. We always build a masking approach that will balance precision with efficiency, ensuring our process won’t slow down your project.
Complex masking shows up in our powder coating shop constantly, and we’re always ready to adapt and innovate in our approach. Here are two real-world examples of our complex masking strategies:
We recently coated a small, two-piece enclosure with multiple button openings where the entire interior had to stay clean. A narrow lip around the cutouts further complicated the challenge. We came up with a clever solution: we used a custom silicone mold to plug through the button holes, along with precise taping. The halves were assembled, coated and cured as one unit, then disassembled and packaged separately.
Some parts require a very precise boundary line. For these jobs, we mask directly from the print and verify placement with calipers to protect the defined portion. The result is a consistent boundary that meets requirements, and our team’s experience with these tools ensures the process is never slowed down.
Powder coating solutions aren’t one-size-fits-all, and our expert team tailors their approach to every individual challenge. But it’s important to note that the task becomes even faster for repeat parts.
We always document what works, from masking materials used to custom plugs or fixtures. From there, we can always move quickly on your repeat runs while delivering consistent results.
